'I was delighted to attend the NTIPDU
seminar last week. What is really encouraging and impressive about it
was the thought and commitment to quality shown by a really important
sector of the security industry. NTIPDU is an umbrella body for
security dogs and the basis its whole 'reason to be' is to raise
standards and deliver a really professional service within that
sector. With regulation ensuring that the people in the security
industry are honorable and competent, NTIPDU is carving out for itself
a place as one of the few bodies who will ensure that through its
carefully developed training when its certificated dogs and handlers
are used they are professionally trained and the dogs well controlled.
The Joint Security Industry Council (JSIC) is a not a trade body, but
a cross industry organisation whose aim is to see standards and
quality across the industry raised. It is really pleasing to see just
how much NTIPDU are committed to the same thing. With them and
similar quality bodies in other sectors, 'on the case', the huge pent
up potential that the security industry has within it to make an
impact in a variety of ways in countering crime and disorder, of
course, in partnership with the police, can be released.
The security industry is going through very significantly change at
the moment. The rate of that change is going to increase over the next
few months as not only does it become properly regulated and trained
(as will happen from January next year), but because it offers an
increasing range of highly professional services it will more and more
be available to help other agencies in the fight against crime and
disorder. It will take time to ensure regulation is properly bedded
in, but with the organisations represented by JSIC (and NTIPDU is one
of them) committed to high standards, I believe that the future
development of the security industry is in pretty safe and
professional hand.'
